Problem is, a lot of Americans believe that the proper response to criminal activity is punishment and not rehabilitation. Those folks are tough to convince that prison should be more humane.

Should a third grader be punished for that - or should her parents? A better solution might be to teach the 8 year old what’s right and punish the parent.

I’d really like if more of the juvenile justice system were things like this. Throwing kids into detention centers rarely makes them into better citizens (surprise surprise); I’d much rather see a focus on service and education that helps tie kids into the community.
