To be fair, Diana’s at her best in the books when describing 18th century life and politics. I told a friend, ‘if you want to learn how soap was made in colonial America these books are for you!’ (which i do!) but she falls short in the 20th century sections, imo, of nailing the tone, atmosphere, and gender politics.…
