Stannis had occupied Dragonstone, but “recently” left with all his soldiers and servants to march North to Winterfell. It didn’t sit empty for 20 years.
And the Sam sequence was maybe 2 minutes long, and I found it hilarious. Not the first time I literally LOL’d at GoT, but definitely the loudest.

The Sam scene is a comedic montage that conveys the passage of time. Edgar Wright would be happy with that they did in the edit.

“Dragonstone” succeeded at this when it relied on its visuals, especially so when conveying Dany’s heart-swelling return without dialogue or getting across Sam’s lowly position in the Citadel through an expertly edited barrage of exceedingly vile bedpans.
