Definitely check out Streeteasy, they have a lot of no-fee listings and aren't as spammy as Craigslist. As for neighborhoods, Windsor Terrace, Kensington, and Bay Ridge are affordable options in Brooklyn, and Hamilton Heights in Manhattan is worth checking out.
