Not much air getting through the front, as the intercooler and radiator where taking up a lot of space. That engine compartment was so small the batteries were in the trunk.

Though it doesn’t look like it here, you could relocate the intake on early (supercharged) Cooper s to the same spot, and take advantage of the windshield forcing air down into the engine bay through some vents. It’s not impossible, especially on cars with steep windshields.
