I don't know about American (what is American anyway), but it's definitely cultural or class related. My upper-class extended family doesn't view me and my SO as married. We've been together for years, live together, share a car, share pets.

Didn't Braveheart also win an Oscar?
Your ex wife is fucking someone younger and hotter than you RIGHT NOW. Just thought I'd throw that in there in case your brain wasn't already burning with the thought of it. (Pretty obvious it was) I bet they bought expensive sheets too. With your Ed Hardy money! Better go jump off a bridge.
Yes, this! And Team Duckie, while we're on the subject.
I don't think movie reviews are supposed to be objective. If they were, they'd just be a short plot summary and the runtime.
I thought Blue Jasmine was insanely overrated. I do enjoy a lot of his earlier work with Diane Keaton. Those are some of his best films.
Liberty Ross put her successful career on hold to become a mother and then raise her kids. She moved with her husband to another country to support his career.
She gave up her career to have children, be a stay at home mom, and move to LA to further HIS career. He either wanted her to give up her career to be at home with the kids or went along with it. Alimony is specifically supposed to help a partner who lost out on career opportunities/normal career trajectory because of…
Her perceived emotional maturity and intelligence, I'm guessing. Based on her behaviors, I would guess she has an emotional age of about 17.
What I get from this: No woman gave it up for Schopenhauer. His balls were very blue.
Hm, or you know she was far more successful than him when they married and supported him/his career for a good portion of their marriage and then put it on hold to raise their children. So seems like a very fair settlement actually - especially for him. Would he have the success without her money to support them? her…
Dude. Get a therapist.
I dunno, for a guy who ditches a 12-year marriage (Christ, these days, that's practically a Silver Anniversary) to fool around with someone pretty-much-still-a-teenager, a Malibu beach house and a 1970 VW Van seems like the perfect setup....
AKA the "make out mobile"?
Sorry Rupert, you cheat on your wife, you deserve to get taken for everything. And btw: You are an idiot for giving up THAT lovely woman for Kristen Stewart.
Uhm, again, no. Alimony in 2014 has nothing to do with women or men - but simply you do not want to unfairly disadvantage financially one party in a divorce. You don't actually know anything about this woman's ability to support herself. Stay at home spouses, especially those that have done it for many years, will…
She put her entire career on hold when they had children (as many women still do), which is the real reason why alimony exists today. She essentially did not work from 2004-2010. He would not have been able to make the movies he made and had a family had she not done that.
I think it applies more in the case where a spouse put their own career on hold to raise children and support the efforts of the other spouse by tending to running the household.
