I think the difference is that Catholicism is so centrally controlled. There are difference factions of Islam, different sects control different governments and there's no absolute agreement on who's in charge, unlike the Holy See that's pretty much dictating church policy from the Vatican.

I don't think that's quite the same as the mafia-level organization that the Catholic church has demonstrated in shielding/defending these priests. Every religion has some super messed up stuff going on, but when you donate to the Catholic church you may well be directly supporting their pedophile legal defense funds.
