So I take it this is why most of the automatic car washes in my area have those tracks that guide the car through from start to finish. Of course, our Intrepid (lol) driver probably would have fucked that up, too.

If the department had fired this guy outright, the local FOP/police union would have moved heaven and earth to get this guy’s job back with extra bennies, nevermind his provisional status. Explains why the department washed its hands of him with a forced resignation.
