Apparently at one point they were used for fighting wars (see Lt Surge in the original versions) and I guess the training and catching of them is some of kind of vestige of it. Either that or the children are being unknowingly turned into child soldiers! 

I love spinach but a whole salad of it does horrible things to me. If you put just a little bit of dressing and some tomatoes plus jalapenos on it and I'll eat a 1/2 lb of it but Lord will I regret it later.
