Zika has been around since at least the 1940s. However, my understanding is that there weren’t spikes of microcephely in Africa or Polynesia. The symptoms experienced there weren’t terribly serious compared to any other virus. I could be wrong, though- feel free to point me to a source stating otherwise.
Although you’re right that we should be careful about overestimating the risk of Zika’s effects on unborn children, I’m not sure that CMV is a great comparison here. Granted, I only know what I’ve read in the article you linked.
