Because the newspapers wouldn’t have published some of these photos without him. His presence guaranteed good coverage, enabling the media to show photos of very non-scary-looking families from Syria.
Not his doing? His government arranged for their arrival. What did he have to do, fly the plane himself?
National Post IS the business paper, so of course they did that.
Harper and his gang did plenty of grandstanding. It sets the tone for the PM to be welcoming this first wave of arrivals — this is the image the rest of the world sees, and it is likely to reduce hostility toward the country as a whole. Be grateful.
Look at the Canadian government’s immigration website, http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/ The rules may change again because we have the first truly new government since 2006. There are a number of blogs kept by American expats in Canada, too. It’s easiest/best to move if you line up a secure job first.
