Yes, the Ed Wood example is a perfect showcase of a well-crafted story being told at a good pace. It’s the kind of filmmaking the eponymous filmmaker himself would never have been able to achieve. :)
If it’s not a hard cut, then it’s not a match cut. I understand that the definition of what constitutes a match cut may feel ambiguous but words mean things and a cut is a cut. Yes, I’m a prescriptivist, through and through.

I only watched about 40 seconds before I was too annoyed. On the whole, only half of the shots I saw were match-cuts in the true sense of the word. Nothing wrong with pointing out well-planned filmmaking techniques, but I think it’s disingenuous to have people thinking that these are all truly match cuts.
