It actually would have been criminal speeding, necessitating a night in prison and impounding of the vehicle at the least, which would probably slow down his run.

Looks like tape to cover fender and hood gaps (every bit of aero counts!), as well as absorb the inevitable rock chip circus of driving across the country.
