60 is not nearly old enough to be justified/forgiven/ignored for her racism. She would have gone to integrated schools, and was young enough during the civil rights era to know better.

I was really trying to say that there are spaces within Christianity in which scientific investigation are valued. It's just that they don't often advertise themselves as Christian to avoid being associated with the crazies.

The right to be treated like a human being is very special. We have to take care that its not wasted. We can't just give it away to anybody off the street....

I remember from that TEDx talk the porn researcher saying that they basically could not find a control group to do experiments about the effects of porn on men in the U.S., because there just aren't any men that don't watch porn to compare them with. Video: http://tedxtalks.ted.com/video/TEDxGlas…

I'd be interested in what would happen if there were a Title IX-like law that required spending per student to be equal across schools within a state (if you do it within district you'll just create splinter districts).

so in reality there's an even stronger majority of people who aren't opposed to marriage equality, because of the people who don't bother to register to vote.

Right, I just wanted to make the distinction between colleges that maintain an affiliation with their historic denominations but have education as their primary goal, and colleges that have doctrine and ideology as their goal, and project a veneer of education.

I still drive by Romney Ryan signs on my way to work...

Fundamentalist Christian colleges can be very unsafe places for people who don't fit their norms. However I did read a piece from someone who came out at Liberty of all places, and said that professors, spiritual advisors, and the therapist the school paid for were all very loving, supportive and understanding as he

voter turnout was 80%? How is the nation's voter turnout less than 60% if one of the biggest states was so high? Some other state must really be sucking it up at voting.

The result would be close to the system we have now. There would be very good public schools in very good neighborhoods, and shitty public schools in shitty neighborhoods. Tax dollars would flow to the wealthier schools because they are funded by property tax dollars, school boards are almost exclusively run by

I remember a few examples from middle and high school of this happening.

I'm the same way. I used to be freckly, now I'm not.

I really liked him in Big Fan. It's a really interesting take on self-delusion, being a creepy weird dude, and sports fandom. And Oswalt nails it.

There is definitely room for a discussion about Mother's Day and how the celebration of it is largely reinforces patriarchal notions about gender roles (On this special day, everything is backwards, and we don't treat Mom like a workhorse. But don't worry, things will be back to normal tomorrow!)

The whole dad walking you down the aisle thing is a little antiquated/horrifying anyway. It's another one of those remnants of the time when a woman was defined/possessed by the men in her life. I didn't really realize it at the time, but I'm glad my wife insisted on having both her parents, and then demanded that

Not every emotional or social consequence applies. But there are certain circumstances that don't really fall in another category, but still would be rape. Hazing would fall into this category. Trying to be cool would not.

In some states being under the influence of alcohol indicates that you are incapable of consent. It's still not how you feel about it in the morning.

I live in a rural area. Cats are good at killing mice and snakes. So they are useful. However, sometimes it goes crazy, like when people have feral cat colonies of like 30 or 40 cats that they are feeding, which sometimes happens, and yeah, that's bad.

This is concerning because it sets precedent for officials to squash protesters who are doing a myriad of other things that someone might deem "offensive" to kids under twelve. What about people protesting genocide? Or posters about breastfeeding? I could even see it being applied to get injunctions against Slutwalks,
