Elbows can put incredible pressures on hydrants and cause them to unscrew or crack. With a 5 or 6 inch opening there are a lot of forces working against that idea.
If they are not calling from a cell phone, or no signal like we get a lot where we live, you need to also tell them to come back or at least tell you when they have done it. You tell some people to go do something and they might just walk away.

Growing up my dad always put a newspaper behind the wall everytime we did a renovation. then we wrote a note on the backside of the drywall. Found a couple newspapers in some other renovations, a neat thing, just not as personal.
