The AutoBike. I just remember the infomercials for it haha. I wanted it so bad.

E-bikes are an exception to this. That gets people out of some dangerous spots that rim brakes couldn’t due to the benefit of added clamping force. It also pulls the brake surface out of the elements that a rim can get into.

hydraulic disc brakes are overkill for casual biking and maybe even road bikes, but utterly clutch for mountain bikes

I remember the first time I drove in California (rented convertible Mustang on the PCH, total tourist stuff). Coming from Australia where the limit is 0.05, I thought it was so cool to be able to drive at 0.15.
We went out to dinner, I knocked back a few cocktails and was still under the limit.

There was an earlier version in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s that had the weights sliding on spokes on the wheel itself. It was at a now defunct sporting goods store. I rode it briefly out of curiosity, but don’t recall what it was like other than thinking it was mechanically interesting, but not something I wanted. I

I moved to a skateboard after the bike - that way i could keep it with me. Boards were all the rage in like 2003

I’m not truly free unless thousands of children are dying.

My bike lasted about 4 months before being stolen on campus, so 2 years seems pretty good.

“This is what’s wrong with America! Seatbelt laws and drunk driving laws and safety safety safety! When I was kid we didn’t have any of this gubmit bullshit and we were just fine.”

i actually had one of these. Got it cheap in a guys front yard sale back in college. had no idea what i was getting, but riding home i knew something was interesting.

Did you think today’s stupid people were hatched from pods? No, these are their parents.

That is a fun aspect of the video.

My stepfather who worked 2nd shift, loved to hit the bar after work(before he married my mother). He would stagger outside and pass out in the front seat of his car.Around 5AM the police would wake him up and tell him to drive home before the rush hour traffic started. They did this for years.

Alberta was one of the last provinces to pass a seatbelt law, and some yokel fought it and won, albeit temporarily.  The ruling was appealed and overturned, reinstating the seatbelt law.  It’s kinda funny going back and watching these clips because wearing a seatbelt is a no-brainer nowadays (it was also a no-brainer

It’s 1983 and I’ve got my newly minted license. DWI check points start becoming a thing in Northern NJ where I grew up because, well alot of us dumb teens were driving drunk, crashing and occasionally dying! Forget about our parents who were “buzzed” after a night of hanging with friends & family.

I’m sure both of those interviewed and probably the 40yo baby are all wearing MAGA hats today....

Americans have no idea what communism actually is. It is just the pre 9/11 tantrum word for anything we didn’t like to most Americans. You think Joe Stalin cared if his workers drove drunk, if they drove at all?

I don’t remember this video, but there was an Op-Ed piece from the 70's or early 80's with a guy claiming he was a better driver when drunk or something along those lines.
