While it's at least partially true that the Iranian people chose the current regime in the late 1970s, that's no reason to believe that they endorse it today. Since there's no way under the regime to fundamentally change the regime, the ability of the people to express their wishes is sharply curtailed.

It might be a further play on the fact that Archer’s timeline is completely ambiguous. They have the Soviet Union still around, modern cell phones, 1980's computer terminals, reel-to-reel hard drives, 1960's clothing, and cars from all over the years.
