It’s ironic that lower Federal Court judges are subject to a higher standard of behavior and ethics than SCOTUS.

The move comes after one of her former collaborators, music producer Detail, was arrested for sexual assault in 2020 for a number of alleged attacks that took place between 2010 and 2018. Detail, whose real name is Noel Fisher, has also worked with Nicki Minaj, Akon, and Lady Gaga, and won a Grammy in 2015 for…
Our first reaction is to punish the abuser, and I want this asshat under a jail, but our first reaction should probably be to get the victim’s needs considered as well.
...Are you trying to imply that people should suffer through stuff to try and marry rich?
It seemed a little bizarre, but I took the statement at face value—“future federal nominations by the Biden White House” describes an extant/actual category of “things”, and because it had to do with horse trading for a Federal district Court position, I assumed the specific “future Federal nominations” would be other…
Too late to edit previous comment, but Slate has more details on the deal, which is apparently this judge and McConnell doesn’t block two US Attorney’s for Kentucky, i.e. one lifetime appointment for two US Attorneys who might be fired as soon as January 2023.
The minority party can delay confirmations, but cannot prevent nominees from getting confirmed. Dems did it during Trump. Also, by the same token as a point OP made, McConnell can stop taking action to delay confirmations, he can’t guarantee no one in his caucus will keep doing things to delay.
I don’t think the judicial system would necessarily yield a poor result for Johnson—this is a high profile case, and the evidence against Bridges is appears pretty damning. What needs to happen is for public sentiment to allow for the NBA to employ Bridges so that Bridges can remain flush enough to provide Johnson and…
Does she have any defenses? I get that this is a kangaroo court, but is she at least going to to present some argument that she is actually/literally not guilty of this?
“I would prefer a different outcome than that, but that’s not the debate today in Arkansas. It might be in the future, but for now, the law triggered with only one exception ... in the case of the life of the mother.”
I realize this is going to come off as quite mercantilist, but wouldn’t the best thing for this family be for (a) Johnson to be granted a restraining order against Bridges preventing him from contacting her or the children; (b) for Johnson to be granted a divorce and awarded some incredible sweetheart deal for alimony…
if Democrats are going to continue asking people to vote to make up for what we lost on Friday, they are going to need to show us something much different than this.
It is not one judgeship for dozens, that’s not what’s going on here.
Before I read your comment, I kept re-reading the article and looking at other sources to see what I had gotten wrong here—trading one district court seat (albeit in McConnell’s home state,) for the promise of not fucking the administration on dozens of other seats... seems like a really solid deal. But the article is…
I’ll have to read both cases again; it always seemed to me that the rationale provided by the dissenters in Lopez for the commerce clause applying (it was something like ‘kids can’t do as well in school because they’re worried about guns, and therefore the labor force will be worse which will in turn affect interstate…
I would argue that you can’t look at this court’s reasoning as principled, instead you should look at it as an entirely cynical undertaking where if the desired result would be to overturn abortion protection passed by Democrats or if the desired result is to uphold a Republican Congress’ nationwide ban of abortion,…
The thing is that conservatives and libertarians have hated the expansion of the commerce clause, and, with a 6/3 conservative court, they might just overturn precedent on it, especially if it’s the commerce clause being used to protect abortion (not so much if it’s being used to ban abortion).
It feels like a real Sophie’s choice situation with the possibility of Republican nuking the filibuster in order to ban abortion nationwide. I’d personally prefer a system in which the party in power makes policies, and the electorate gets a real first-hand experience of what life is like under different regulatory…
Yes, Biden and other Democratic leaders still need to convince Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) to approve a filibuster carve-out for abortion, but they should at least try.
In order for her to go work for a Pence campaign, I think she’d either have to be dumb as dog shit, super new to politics and desperate, a pretty serious fundie, or already a well-established political operative. Pence has no hope whatsoever of winning—the hardcore Trumpers are vehemently against him, he’s too…
