Whale oil was largely supplanted before the civil war by camphine, a mixture of turpentine and alcohol, because camphine was cheaper, because whales were already becoming a bit scarce. Then coal tar based (at the time) kerosene became more popular.

I mean, you could probably run some diesel engines off whale oil if you had enough whale oil. There just weren’t diesel engines, or other oil engines, during whale oil’s heyday. (I suppose an Aeolipile could be heated using whale oil to produce the steam, but that’s still not very useful.)

The ones just being filmed are the lucky ones among those imprisoned and exploited.

He’s definitely acquired a case of Nashville Ladyface.

There’s mannequin titties.

The thing is, they did okay with one special needs child, who’s now working on a physics PhD at age 19.

It worked for her, her autistic son enrolled in college at 10 to study physics, did his Master’s thesis at 15, and is currently working on his PhD at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada. (He was why they moved to Canada.)
