This was actually part of what left a bad taste in my mouth about Gervais’ schtick. Like he supposedly “calls out” the bad behavior of all these famous people, but he’s still palling around with them like none of it really matters, and to me it feels very smarmy.

He made some other comments too, like when he introduced Eddie Redmayne (who played a trans woman in The Danish Girl) he talked about “this beautiful and talented actress” and then made a disappointed/disgusted face and said “oh, it’s a dude.” Which to me seemed like your standard “trans people are deceptive” kind of

I once accidentally called one of my teachers “mom.” I was embarrassed in the way that only a middle-schooler can be.

I remember this because I was seven that year, and when I tried to go back to school too soon after having the flu and ended up throwing up on the sidewalk on my way into the building, my dad cleaned me up and told me that it’s okay, it even happens to the President sometimes.

I would be very curious to learn more about the racial attitudes in Hungary.

I know it’s a good thing that characters in movies and TV don’t really smoke anymore because we don’t want to encourage kids to smoke, and fuck the tobacco industry etc, but smoking can be a very useful shortcut to showing a character’s mental state.

I really need Shade Court after spending the holidays with my in-laws.

Fair play! I’m kind of new to all this.

The problem is that people see a very clever person saying something controversial or downright offensive in the service of an insightful point, and they think they already have the clever and insightful parts down and all they need is the offensive part.
