I speculated elsewhere, but repeat it here: I have an inkling Kurtzman & co. are going to run with an Andromeda rip-off, where the Discovery acts as the last beacon of the Federation in a fragmented, chaotic universe. Heck I believe this was an abandoned idea at one stage years & years ago.

Insurrection was a decent 7th season episode right up until the joystick came out.
