The US parenting leave situation is just mind-boggling. I totally agree that the maternal leave policies should be brought to a minimum humane level before thinking about paternity leave.

Yep. And he said it in public media, apparently thinking that it was a neutral, informed opinion. And doctors generally tend to downplay the side effects of hormonal contraception, so one has to wonder how he treats women patients who feel that pills give them too many side effects.
I heard the one they’re trying to make now is based on testosterone. So not quite Viagra, but perhaps something like it?
Yeah. I got really mad when a doctor here said that male pill is difficult to produce because they cannot accept as many side effects for it as they can for women’s pills, because side effects must be proportional to the benefits - and women benefit from *their* pill more because without it they would get pregnant!…
I would not trust enough to have the male pill as the only method (I trust my partner 100%, but people forget things, and it’s my uterus, so). But, perhaps there could be a shot or a capsule version? I mean, in the alternative universe where male contraception actually becomes available. But I would trust a shot or a…
That was exactly my impression too. That part of the plot (Lester chasing a 15-year old) was creepy, but I think they got the final scene between them right. The film does not sanction his behavior.

Late to this discussion but this is so true! Also applies to most cinematic depictions of rape (if the rape scenes are claimed to be anti-sexual violence by showing the brutality of rape or something like that).
Damn, I forgot I was reading an old post!
Austria is very much a “Kirche, Kuche, und Kinder” for ladies society. My friend lived there with her husband and child for 3 years and that was at least her impression (though her husband is not Austrian).
I know my personal experience does not trump statistical data, but parents-to-be around me seem to prefer girls, and with a high margin. Many expecting mothers even state this clearly, mothers of girls congratulate each other by saying things like “girls just are the best” and moms with only boys are pitied by some.…
I’m sorry your dad said that. My dad has 3 girls, no boys and he’s always made it clear that he preferred girls (true or not, he made us believe it), but he’s also taken it so far that he keeps saying how girls are smarter and better, boys are like stupid cavemen - and he didn’t stop this when me and my sister had…
But the quality of the film is not a very strong predictor of winning an Oscar, as long as the quality is above some threshold. Therefore, it’s appropriate to ask why Get Out (which is, by most critics, a high-quality film) did not win the Best Picture and also, why, if there are good films in the final selection that…
You do know that you can train for the IQ test, right? You can “improve your IQ” substantially if you practice with similar tests? Like the ones we do in western and asian schools all the time?
While teachers should not flat out say “this law is wrong”, they can most certainly say “many people think this law is wrong, because...”.
Had her mother left the family he would have abused women to find that long lost connection with his mother.
So true. When they tell this tale they always see a nice, shy boy mocked by hot girls. The less attractive girls do not exist in the story.
Exactly. Also, based on the article, what Weinstein allegedly faced as a child is stuff that might make you somewhat non-competent in close relationships (like: not being able to talk about your feelings with your partner), not make you a serial sexual predator and rapist.
Sorry to comment twice, but I just got an idea: would “default/the defaults” work in any way as a slur? I’m not a native English speaker but I thought it might capture some aspects of white privilege and to be belitteling too. Perhaps not insulting enough though.
Where I live (Northern Europe), many older people have adopted the strategy of mansplaining (they are always white men) how “sure, I’m racist, ‘cause we are all racist in a way” sometimes adding some incoherent nonsense about evolution. They do this quite happily and proudly, without a hint of shame. It’s infuriating.
