I just now watched it for the first time, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I especially liked the use of "Navajo Joe."

Hey thanks for posting this. I've been going through the Sight and Sound top 50 list and finally came to this film. While I thought the film was fine, I had trouble figuring out why it was considered great. Your thoughts helped me clarify a few things. I was grappling with how to connect the scenes of Berman visiting

The Director claims the cat is living with him. Maybe the injected with some type of paralysis concoction to get it to be still, but there is no way the cat wasn't hurt. It's 100% real when the kid wrestles with it and ties it up, and judging from its meows, it did not enjoy that.

Wow, thanks for that analysis. I just watched the film for the second time. After finishing it, I actually went back and watched that one scene again, because I felt like I had missed something on first viewing. Your thoughts helped clarify a lot of what I was already thinking.

Jesus, I've never seen Inland Empire, but that scene sounds horrifying and similar to several dreams I've had.

Frank Booth: Hey you wanna go for a ride?

On the couch near where Hopper and Company enter, there is a blonde woman and some type of life-sized doll.

"straight from my heart, fucker! You know what a love letter is? It's a bullet from a fucking gun, fucker! You receive a love letter from me, you're fucked forever! You understand, fuck? I'll send you straight to hell, fucker!"

I agree with that. I just watched Blue Velvet for the second time and I think the most disturbing thing about it that it all seems logical somehow. If you look at individual scenes out of context they appear very random and disturbing, but watching the whole movie, the normal and weird aspects flow together in an

Well in answer to your first question, he is an ad executive during the 60's so he can pretty much just leave work for a lunchtime affair, take a nap, or drink whenever he wants to with no fear of being fired.

Okay, I have similar question. Person B in K Thrace's original post sounds a lot like certain people in my family. People who I have to see at least a few times year. You would think political/religious conversations could be avoided. However, certain remarks (gay-marriage hating, Obama-bashing, some vaguely racist

I love this series, but, yeah, I intentionally watch like 30 minutes before I go to bed to make myself sleepy.

He actually does mention a few B movies. There was a pretty interesting part on Gun Crazy, where he gave that film more credit than most other film historians probably would.

His voice starts off semi-annoying, but once you watch a few episodes, it becomes very endearing. It's such an odd cadence that I don't think I've ever heard before and it makes the his huge proclamations about film really fun to listen to. If I start to read something soon after watching an episode, my internal voice

I would be a hilarious, if over-elaborate, joke if someone wrote an YA novel with one of these chosen hero types who gets killed by the villain at the end of the book, because the hero didn't put in any hard work and attempted to coast on his chosen-one status.

I still think the best way to figure out if a movie is worth seeing is finding a critic, or group of critics, whose tastes you respect or are somewhat similar to your own. Rotten Tomato and Metacritic scores are pretty worthless for me, because there is not any personality to them.
