Exactly. We lead the developed world - the entire world, i think - in percentage of population in prison. So do we have a lower crime rate to show for it? You know damn well we don’t. The reason so many people are in jail/prison have absolutely nothing to do with lowering crime, and everything to do with controlling…

I think this speaks to the larger lie that punishment is an effective deterrent. Sounds rational, sure, but it’s much better at making people feel and act like criminals/outcasts/broken. Everyone who knows anything about it knows that Department of Corrections is a complete misnomer.

I think it also begs the question (I know I’m using the phrase wrong, sorry): what are “establishment” Dems even winning when there’s so little difference between them and Republicans (on certain economic issues at least)? They’re often winning office, sure, but what part of their legislative agenda is getting pushed…

Some of the “establishment” Dems are winning primaries, some aren’t. And I think Paul Blest made a great case yesterday for the fact that 1) even if they don’t win, “progressive” (as opposed to “establishment”) Dems have been successful in “dragging” establishment Dems left, which means 2) a lot of candidates…
