That may be true to a degree, but I think it’s much more about producing a news-like product that appeals to companies who are buying advertising or considering it. NYT and a few other publications that for now may be making more from subscription fees than from advertising, but even they don’t want to piss off

yeah, there are lots of fun, colorful nicknames for the current administration, but I thought that one was perfect - you don’t mess with the classics :)

Sorry, I would if I could but it’s a closely guarded family secret. But this one I found at allrecipes.com isn’t too bad - I mean it’s fine for a middle school potluck or other occasion where you don’t give a shit what they think of you:

It would follow standard English orthography, but I’m sure you know there are countless exceptions to the rules “governing” the language. I think “‘repellent’ was the adjective and ‘repellant’ was the noun” is nearly always how people use them, but at least according to dictionary.com, repellant can also be the

Lyft and Uber are software companies...

It seems to me that criteria B would exclude every single driver from the “independent contractor” designation for both Uber and Lyft, given both companies are exclusively (or nearly-exclusively) ride-sharing companies; arguing that they’re “dispatch companies” or whatever would seem like flat-out baloney to me.

ooh, a deep cut - nice!

i don’t think it’s a stupid question, i think it’s a perfectly reasonable question in response to really sloppy phrasing.

I think that’s an excellent question - and as far as the glib advice “Don’t like Facebook’s privacy policies? Then don’t use Facebook - Problem Solved”, as far as I understand (and as All the Birches said), that DOESN’T solve the problem, and paradoxically you have just as much (and possibly even more) control over

This is... irony.
Or sarcasm.
Or tongue-in-cheek humor.
Or snark.
Some element of the intersection or union of the sets A = irony, B = sarcasm, C = tongue-in-cheek humor, and D = snark.

I’ve never read it either (probably shouldn’t admit that) but I really should one of these days.

If laissez-faire capitalism is some magical, mystical place where the government has no involvement in the economy, then a) the United States from its inception was not laissez-faire, and b) no other country in human history ever has been, either.

yeah, that’s not clear to me either. my impression was that we’re not buying any oil from Iran due to sanctions (same as your impression?), but based on what i read i’m still not 100% certain.
