I want to glom onto your continental drift comment to clarify a statement in TFA that might be a bit misleading:

I stand corrected. Harper did cut funding from the maternal health plan to organizations providing safe abortions in other countries, claiming the reason is because it is a divisive issue.

Absolutely Harper was pro-death penalty but unfortunately for him he was born into the wrong country to lead. Pro death penalty, repealing abortion laws and anti same-sex marriage are platforms he knew would be political suicide in Canada.

I disagree that science will struggle to explain it, since many a scientist is drinking heavily also.

I was right there with you in the sickness. Harper was/is an asshole, but a politician who ultimately didn’t want to open up any decisive issues, like the death penalty, or abortion. He was against abortion but he certainly wasn’t going to open that can of worms either. He was a coward in a lot of ways
