I honestly didn’t wade through all of the emails, but having been on several large development teams I have seen scenarios where one person says “hey - this could be a problem” and the consensus of the group is, “highly unlikely to occur” and generally one engineer can’t override the group. I think GM acted

I got burned in the tech bubble bursting in the late 90s. I will continue to watch as further announcements are made. With the emissions being so much higher, I am wondering if they are meeting EU’s standards (I am not sure how much lower they are than the US’s)? Will other countries demand compensation? So many

It is lower than 110 now, I think it is a little premature to catch the falling knife.

GM most certainly screwed up, but it was a design flaw that they missed and then instead of doing the right (costly) thing immediately, delayed. That is different than intentionally setting out to break a law even if the consequences in one case were more serious than the other. I don’t know if jail time is warranted,

I wondered the same thing. Especially since they are SOOOO far off (10x-40x). This supposedly started in my2009 and continued up thru 2015. My husband was just saying, how will it look when they release the new engine for 2016 and are like “look! worse performance than our old model, but no cheating this time!”

I am an engineer (but not automotive) but have worked at several large companies. When there is a big issue, something like, “hey we won’t be able to sell our new diesel engine in the US because it fails emission standards” - that usually makes it up the chain in powerpoint presentations fairly far. The details might

This may be true, but in the end the CEO is who can be held responsible for what the company is doing. That is why they make the big bucks, no? They are the risk-takers. This is also too large of a scheme for them to easily plead ignorance.

But in any state where you have to regularly pass an emissions test, couldn’t they refuse to recertify your car unless you show you performed the software modification (assuming that ends up being “the fix”)?

Not sure when he stepped down, but the test that discovered the discrepancy was run in late 2013, VW was approached in 2014 and released a “fix” and then 6 months later when questioned on why the fix still failed, admitted the SW cheat. So VW has knows for at least a little while. Those guys from the environmental

It was mentioned in several articles I saw that the US (California in particular) has the toughest auto-emission standards in the world. The main reason being that in sunny locales, diesel emissions contribute to “ozone alert” days (if you have lived in Texas or CA, you know what these are) and so the emissions are

I would love to hear more about the VW engineering culture. If ever there was a conspiracy waiting for a whistleblower, this was it. However, it sounds like despite so many people wondering how they were doing it, they were caught by pure chance, by a group hoping to show how clean diesel technology is. The defeat

No love for the Italian immigrants and Rummy in this thread.

In exchange for my absolution I now need more details on this close encounter with Colin Ferrell so I can add it to my repertoire and I plan to add that he grabbed my ass. Deal?

I disagree. You embellished a story to make it sound better. He traded on people’s sympathies surrounding an event that affected everyone. It is more similar to people who pretend to be vets because they want automatic admission into a generally respected class or group.

Thanks for pointing that out. This article probably shows more about how where you live can change your body perception than anything else. LA is ground zero for an average looks/average body woman to categorize herself as dog-ugly and morbidly obese.

Thanks for sharing your story. I always find the pieces on sex work on gawker intriguing as it is a world I know nothing about. I also believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. My one concern is that the echelon of sex worker that is writing these stories are not the norm in sex work. I think

I think that is just coincidence as Montessori is a popular pre-school style (and is fairly lax about accrediting). I went to a great Montessori when I was a kid and my kids attended two of the schools in our town that were both fantastic.

I think it was just timing. The huge push for healthy eating coinciding with them having this great story. But he should have been done after the first campaign. It was a terrible decision to completely marry his name to the brand name without any further vetting. Once his skeeviness began to reveal itself

I totally agree although I still wish Hillary left Bill after his last term in office.

No equivalent for CPS when you see a spouse being treated like garbage.
