Customers actually pay 100% of most servers salaries, but it’s 20% of the bill (which also includes kitchen/other labor, food costs, rent, etc). Servers often get a “paycheck” for $0 from their boss.

15% used to be the standard. I’m not sure when, but sometime in the last 10 years of so, 20% became the standard. So you’ll still see some people scoffing when someone gives a 15% tip and you’ll hear some people adamantly defending the 15% tip.
Don’t beat yourself up too much- you know now, for next time you’re in the US.
Oh you sweet summer child... Customer tips pay way more than 1/5th of a servers wage! In some places servers get paid $2.13/hr... Tips made up the entirety of my take home pay when I waitressed in NYC.
The only time I didn’t tip was in New York at a casual but fancy restaurant/bar in Chelsea and there were multiple layers of fuckups from the hostess to the manager. It took over an hour to get a hot toddy and Irish coffee in an empty restaurant. We asked nicely twice and nothing happened. We asked for the manager…
I also tip more on breakfast and lunch if the bill is cheap because an extra $5 can make a difference (spoken from past experience).
I’m of the opinion that restaurants should have to pay servers a living wage and tipping should not be mandatory.
I start at 20% and usually go up depending on how much money I have at the time. I also tip way more for breakfast and lunch because the bill is usually really low. The only time I tip 15% is if the server is a real dick, like such an asshole that you want to punch him. Happened recently and I don’t feel bad about the…
So many feelings for the Jay-Z clip. I just came out to my parents a couple months ago - pretty late at 27 years old. I am still trying to figure out what I can say or feel comfortable saying about my life, having a partner, and how to come out to people, friends, and family who have known me for years but not known…
Missing stuffed animals are nothing to scoff at. I had a stuffed white polar bear (he was stuffed with softer beanie baby type stuffing rather than fiber fil) when I was 7 and it was the most awesome cuddle buddy right up into my difficult high school years. He went “missing” one day and it was devastating. I found…
You’re correct.
I attended a law school graduation where - no shit - Jerry Springer was the speaker. There was some blow back in advance of his speech, as can be expected.
This one by Jamie Oliver was my favourite:
It’s totally bullshit. The all-island #IBelieveHer rallies in solidarity with the victim are heartening though.
I had to block some people on social media because of this. I can’t even. Some of the opinions are just disgusting.
And now Jackson and his legal team are threatening to take legal action to sue anyone who posts on social media about believing the victim because of the “damage to his good name”. Of course now the number one trending twitter topic is #SueMePaddy.
And it has been shown over and over that time and memory do strange things when someone is under severe stress, as one would be when being raped. If she can’t remember and if something is different from one day to the next is common.
1,000 people in Northern Ireland showed sports fans everywhere the proper response to the heinous behavior of someone lauded on the field.
That is heartbreaking. Take it from an American....you are not your country! Keep up the good fight and don’t let the bastards get you down.
Hi, I’m a long time lurked, but have never contributed here. I’m a woman in my 30s and I live in Belfast and I am heartbroken since this verdict was announced.
