Problem is there is a large portion of America 30-40% (trump’s base) that will vote because of immigrants. As soon as they smell migrant caravan, Muslims, mexico boarder, immigrants stealing jobs, and whatever racist scapegoating you want, they are thrown into a angry feeding frenzy and vote stupid.

It’s not the elected officials who are dumb or ignorant, it’s the people that elect them that are as well.
