'Making fun' of something COULD be mocking it, but 'making fun' is a 'softer' word that typically refers more to teasing than mocking. Kimmel was condescending, and that's the issue. You were sugarcoating the issue by saying he is "making fun of something silly". He was much more harsh than that. If he had simply

Mocking something (in this situation) means you are "making fun" of something in a condescending way. He is putting on an air of superiority, which is understandably annoying.
For example, making fun of a quarterback who fumbles the ball by running into the butt of his own player is fine - mocking him isn't, especially

You make a good point about the "fake" sense of community. It's a little startling how many people seem to fit that bill. That said, I don't think modern society has created more of those - it's just that, in the past, we never interacted with them. They stayed home and didn't talk to anyone.

There is a difference between "making fun" of something and mocking it. There was obvious condescension in what he said and that's what made some people angry. Some overreacted as Internet people are prone to do.

Wait a minute…what league were you in where you were charged $2k just to play? I played football, basketball, and baseball and I never had to pay a dime for it, other than the balls and bats I bought to play with myself over the years. I certainly spent less than $100 on it all.

I mainly watch Let's Plays because they are either doing something I can't (either a custom setup or with a large group cooperating) or because I'm somewhat interested in a game but don't want to spend money and a lot of time to play it. The "sessions" you see are cut down for funny moments and moments that drive the
