I dated a pilot a few years ago. I learned a lot about what you're talking about. I wish it were mandatory that everyone learns how every mode of transport functions. At least enough so they're not so damn blindingly ignorant on the subject.

Hey, cool! We graduated the same year!

We got to use some hand tools (sort of) in technology class, but this was during the late 90's (98-99) where there was a greater push for computer science and engineering than actual carpentry skills.

I....can't remember if we learned ironing in home ec. I know I learned how to hand-embroider in 7th grade and make broccoli quiche, but ironing I think was not allowed. We also did not have a shop class.
