Why, those two epidemics aren’t comparable at all! They’re completely different!

What do we get for the crack epidemic? Oh that’s right, thousands of poor people are still in jail. I could really get going here, but I don’t think there are enough characters allowed in Disqus for me to rant sufficiently about just how differently we have treated the victims here.
You lost me at “DEA as the good guys”.
lol, no.
I don’t listen to Billie Eilish. Her music means the world to my stepdaughter, so I have some respect for anyone who makes her feel special & respected. She could be amazing but it’s not my call to make, & I’m not going to criticize anyone for their taste.
Also, saying she “one-upped” Cobain is by attacking the fans shows a profound misunderstanding of Cobain’s lyric. By saying “teenage angst has paid off well, now I’m bored and old”, it’s not just a weary groan about fame. It’s a warning to listeners (especially the jock meathead types who just moshed to it like they…
Also seems a bit weird to compare a depressive burnout who stumbled into superstardom with a hyper-connected child of immense privilege. Kurt was never interested in being relatable, Billie never *was* relatable in the first place.
And in 10 years, AV Club will be lauding her comeback release as the best pop music of the year.
Not a cynical person by nature, and generally supportive of GMG writers, but I’m just curious - how much money did the label pay to have you write this? Like, how much went to the company and how much went to you? Or was this part of an existing promotional contract?
I respect the hell out of anyone who takes a chance, does their thing, and exposes themselves to criticism.
“This piece of bullshit is almost as bad as Rebecca Black! Who we respect and like.”
Counterpoint: being brave enough to expose yourself to criticism (and I agree, it takes bravery) doesn’t (and shouldn’t) make you ineligible for criticism?
Ok, so today I learned it was/is bad to make fun of Rebecca Black, because it was mean but also more importantly there’s now someone new to make fun of.
So this woman, whose uber rich daddy attempted to buy his daughter fame and a career some time ago, is now “one of pop’s most exciting artists,” who no one but the AV club is talking about? Sorry, I don’t buy it.
“Black has reinvented herself as one of pop’s most exciting artists.”
I’m really tired of this kind of performative niceness. It’s insincere and cynical.
A decade after “Friday,” Black has reinvented herself as one of pop’s most exciting artists
I can’t remember who said it first, but:
I know you guys are going way the hell out of your way in pretending you weren't dumping on her ten years ago, but describing someone who's pumping out the most generic shit imaginable as "one of pop's most exciting artists" is beyond the fucking pale.
