So following up on the second sentence of the OP, I recall an episode of Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, or some other show from the 80's or 90's. To confirm what others are saying, in general no.  The first book actually is good, and worth reading.  That said, the first season of the show tracked it fairly closely, so you're not going to be reading anything new — though the ending of the first book is completely different from the ending of the first season of

This is True Blood, it'll be both!  My guess is Bill spends next season as a villian, and the season after that redeeming himself.  There's also the high probability that Bill is "Warlow" which would further push him into villain territory.

I was hoping Hoyt would die as well.  I just don't see his character having any connection to the main plot in this or any future season.  That means if he lives the True Blood writers will have to create even more tangential plots for him to participate in, and True Blood already has too many of those.  Sack up, take
