You're right about pretty much all of this. I think the second paragraph is accurate. I'm curious what will happen with the word of mouth. It certainly seems to be a damn good movie, but I wonder if the word of mouth will be poisonous due to it being so dark and lacking CGI explosions and giant robots (I think!).

This is very true. The trailers appear to have been truly accurate, instead of some kind of attempt to make it look wild and awesome like Suicide Squad.

This one strikes me as having fair potential to be a Mad Max FR-style fizzle. Like, it still ends up profitable, but is too distinctive and uncompromising to reach a big enough audience to really be a smash hit. I feel like the word of mouth might feature some "it's not fun wtf I hate this." Then again, The Dark

Yeah, of course it's debatable whether it's truly "GOOD," but by and large I think a fair majority would agree that enough of the jokes landed that it was legitimately funny, the supporting characters (the cab driver and the two x-men) were amusing, and that the central relationship was handled quite well. Plus, the

Yeah, that's why I thought to compare it! I figure that's a big part of why he was hired, and it was definitely the right choice.

Oh, of course, I LOVE Captain America TFA, primarily because of how great Agent Carter is in every respect - not only is she well-written and a portrayed by a great actor, but that is the best romantic subplot in any of these superhero movies by a country mile. Plus, stuff like the scene where he jumps on the grenade

Existenz has some nastiness in it, like I think the waiter getting killed? I don't remember it very clearly, it's been years.

I agree with most of the list, but not really Captain America. That struck me as being very much in the spirit of The Rocketeer!

Agreed completely. It would have just been a jarring shift from basically every single other scene in the movie.

I just wonder what studios already had in the pipeline when this came out. I have to assume some Deadpool rip-offs were being planned, apart from simply Deadpool 2, which sounds like it has the potential to be a Kick-ass 2-level nosedive. I'm not the biggest fan of Movie Bob, especially not after he adopted the

It seemed like it was initially trying to go in an R-rated direction before the studio interfered, like it still had the (implied) head explosions and body horror and what-not.

Right. My argument there was just in response to your "none have been good enough yet." They may not have been, but as they clearly have no problem with nominating movies that are even worse, that's clearly not what's holding them back! There's probably some genre bias at work here. I think they are getting past

Well, plenty of them have been better than say, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Or probably Avatar.

Seriously. I could swear I've been hearing about the guy for over 10 years, and he's looked just like that the whole time!!

Agreed completely. I absolutely hated Connor and everything he did (well, befor his send-off in season 5).

I really liked her character throughout. I thought the only thing that made Dexter himself interesting was her having to keep him grounded. His dancing act through seasons 3 and 4 was most of what made it watchable for me; I couldn't stand most of the "serial killer of the week" crap, or especially Jimmy Smits. I

Good one. I saw that several years ago and kind of forgot about it. It's gotten more attention in recent years and probably is as well known as the two I mentioned at this point.

Ah yeah, that one does seem largely child-appropriate, there's just that string of scary deaths as our narrator loses it towards the end.

Definitely. Now there's been a string of movies that I've watched purely because she's in them. This would likely be a step backwards, as she'd probably be buried.

I am so glad that this is good. I've been looking forward to it since the first trailer, and it seemed like a pretty risky proposition in the very, very white horror genre (the only ones I can think of that are still widely remembered are Tales from the Hood and frickin' Blacula). Now I just hope it finds mainstream
