Fulci's classic "The Beyond" had a considerably nastier scene of a dog biting the throat of its blind owner! I guess he just had to one-up Argento.

Thank you for this!! I never thought to look up the dialogue in that scene.

"I guess I just don't know why its It Follows that everyone dislikes because of, and, knows all the broken rules."

Yeah, I think of the giant ant movie too! I only immediately recognize the French movie when people call it "Ils."

2 is by far the most fun of the series, the death setups were never equaled in the later entries. I think the scenes in between the deaths were useless in every entry.

Where'd you hear that? I don't doubt it, but all the pictures I saw behind the scenes of that had her in a big leather harness that made it look like what you describe would have been avoided.

The original is one of my favorite movies, and I don't think the new one is attempting to displace it. It isn't trying to do any of the same things. I think it's very good for what it is. I don't really even compare them, they're two very different movies that happen to have the same name and share the mall and

Middle-aged horror fans all still talk about it, and it regularly shows up on "best horror of the 90s" "best horror of the last 25 years" etc lists. The fact Sony still hasn't released it on blu-ray in this country doesn't help its exposure, unfortunately.

They also show a close-up of her beating heart being stabbed, just to make sure we get that the wounds were fatal.

I didn't like the movie very much, but I LOVED Billy Zane throughout. And as a big fan of The Shield, I liked seeing CCH Pounder, even if she didn't have much to do.

Man, this post is trying so hard.

Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling and Lizard in a Woman's Skin and The Psychic all destroy anything Argento ever did in the genre, IMHO. He was a master of the genre, those three movies just aren't as well known as his big four splatter movies.

It mainly bothers me that he put the gore in front of the plot. He was willing to totally rewrite the script and change the concept just to be able to keep it as bloody as he wanted. I don't think the original script is all that good, but it seems like a weird compromise.

Agreed. The ONLY effect that doesn't hold up as one of the best practical gore effects of all time is the part where the legs get dragged away and the hips look really deflated.

Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red and Tenebrae are all great. Opera, Inferno, and even Stendhal Syndrome have their moments. And the ending of Phenomena is one of the funniest sustained bits of insanity ever filmed.

There are a lot of ounces of fat on it. A lot of people greatly prefer the international cut which is a full half an hour shorter and mostly just removes stuff like the arm wrestling scene! I like the longer version more, but…it's definitely flabby.

The opening of Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed is a weird one, I forgot all about that. He never exhibits behavior like that in any of the other movies, IIRC. The mask thing is something else!

I dunno why he says giallos followed in its footsteps, though. Unless he means it gave Bava the clout to make The Girl Who Knew Too Much, or something.

Yeah, that movie becomes horrible. The music number with a rape in the background is where it totally lost me.

Yes, the director's cut of Zombie's Halloween 2 is the best movie in the entire franchise apart from the original. (well, maybe besides the so-ridiculous-it's-awesome #3) It makes a serious attempt to deal with PTSD and the murders are as ugly as possible, other things which all of the other sequels skipped in favor
