I actually spent this afternoon watching S2 of “One Mississippi” (I’m off work due to Irma). Without getting too spoilery, there’s a plotline that is very similar to the Louis CK rumors. The details and context are different, but Notaro definitely appears to be referencing the rumors through her show. It also leads to

Women really can’t win in these situations. Don’t come forward, but try to protect fellow comedians by warning them about the powerful man’s transgressions: the allegations are “rumors.” Come forward, make direct accusations about your own mistreatment: results in being called a liar, being sued, blacklisting from

The same reason mediocre white men become President.

You are correct, James. Other comics know he does this. They’re covering, as usual. Abuse of women in comedy and show business is pretty much legion. it’s a given.

Things have really been delightful for the women who stood up to Cosby haven’t they?

Not commenting on the rest of it, but Doug Stanhope made what was obviously a twitter joke, not an admission at all.

The standup world is unbelievably sexist. I have a friend who’s a comic in Toronto, and the stuff she deals with every single day is book material. I just hope she’ll write it up that way, instead of just putting it on Facebook.

Didn’t think I had to include the “/s”. Thought I was being fairly obviously sarcastic.

If these so called lady comics are real, you should encourage them to kill their careers and speak out against Louis CK.

She didn’t say what “it” was. A vague question gets a vague denial. A commenter on the NYT page said that was probably on advice from legal. The Cosby victims have been dragged through hell, so how many ambitious female comics would risk the same and the end of their careers.

I would argue that Jezebel’s frequent write ups about this is doing a favour to the women who feel unable to speak out. Which I suspect is their goal.

While I agree with you that “small fish” are usually paralyzed against speaking out about the “big fish,” I’m still on the side of people pressing Tig Notaro (or anyone, for that matter) to come out with some harder evidence. And CK’s pretty much done what Notaro asked him to do in the first place: he addressed the

I didn’t say he did, random internet person.

It is incredibly hard to speak out against a beloved male comedian. Nobody wants to believe it, and it’s a career ruiner.

I think you may have a different definition of the word “emphatic”. If it comes down to, “did this man violate and harass women, and should I support his career?”, I look for a little more than a one word response. Your conscience may vary.

I did encourage them to speak out. Sorry I didn’t mention that in my original post. But I’m in an industry that’s 98% male, what hope do they have against keyboard commandos like yourself who attack them?! How do you think men in the industry are going to react?

but what else was he gonna say?

I’ve been doing stand-up comedy for almost 20 years and I’ve had two famous female comics confirm that he’s tried to do this in front of them.

why do people keep giving this guy work?

Isn’t him saying...

“So it’s not real? “No.” he responded. “They’re rumors, that’s all that is.””
