I agree. This has a New Super Mario Bros feel w/r/t to the art style which is... fine. It just lacks a little something special (the one thing I think the console Zeldas have really started to nail).

This image gets bandied about the internet a lot, but I think I would've enjoyed a direction more akin to it:
