The show has run it's course and, unless there are other problems for O'Brien, he likely would have wanted to leave to move on to bigger and better things anyway, as his star is rising. The show would be nothing without him.

Now Dylan O'Brien can go become a star and Tyler Posey can become the man-child MTV host he was meant to be.

Yeah, it's amazing the way TCW… I don't want to say "redeems" the prequels, because maybe that's going too far, but it certainly fills in a lot of those character and world-building holes and makes the prequels a lot more palatable.
