Yeah, I’m a war vet and that was one of the most realistic war-fighting moments in any Star Wars film for me. You can think you’re ready, but that first realization about how awful combat is can be devastating.

Plus, his “friends” were trying to kill him, and would have killed him if he didn’t shoot back. Not sure what the problem is here... kill or be killed.

Also, who’s to say he was even friends with that guy. Finn could be in shock after seeing all this death and violence for the first time and just stops at Stormtrooper that is reaching at anything with his last breath. Plus, they all kind of look the same and have no identifying markers. Dead guy might have confused…
