There was a big article in The Hollywood Reporter that came out around 6 months ago which went into detail of how shitty it was making The Revenant. It included a number of anonymous crew members who were fired or quit the production and told THR about how Inarritu was basically being a tyrant on set.

Don't forget that The Revenant is the more "artsy" film and is about all deep, profound things such as pain and suffering. Speaking of which, has anyone heard about how everyone suffered while making the film? I don't think they've made that clear enough.

There's no way the Academy would give a gonzo, pure action film like Fury Road their top gong, no matter how much they clearly admired it (10 Oscar nominations!). The fact that it's gotten that kind of recognition at all is a miracle in and of itself.
