I've been hit with this recently. I moved stuff to related subdirectories, but it was still taking forever for the Green Line of Death to come to a standstill. And this fixed it completely. And now I'll try to remember this if and when it happens again.

Maybe it's the crap I have installed (and installed for me that I can't get rid of...), but my biggest annoyance is to hear my phone ring, ring and ring.
