DS9 did all of the above back in 1997, and has garnered a huge fan base after the fact. It's entirely possible to be gripping and have aliens.

Why does everyone like this? There seems to be no elements of the games IE no interdimensional war and all of the characters just seem like serial killers. It seems more like a Twisted Metal movie than anything else.

@Fwiffo: Seriously, one of my favorite concpets from the Red Faction games was that the enemy were humans, and THERE ARE NO ALIENS ON MARS. Sorry. But there is the chance that these things AREN'T aliens, and possibly related to the nano blah blah blah from the first game. Genetic engineering? Probably.
