Emperors of Rome is a charming, succinct introduction to Roman history. A bit more approachable than some of the more heavyweight entries into this genre.

Colson Whitehead did something similar several years back for his amusing nonfiction book “The Noble Hustle.” He played in the World Series of Poker but had nowhere near this level of success. He writes beautifully about beef jerky though.
