And then my miiiiiiind split open
It's hard for me to give one answer to pretty much any question, but the one that consistently stands out in my mind is Ride the Lightning by Metallica
I could die a happy man if I never have to read the words "gender swapped remake" again. Although they'd never admit it, I wonder if some members of the AV Club staff feel somewhat responsible for this trend with all their soapboxing about diversity and inclusiveness.
Homer, that was downright decent of you.
"You are unwise to lower your defenses." -2016, probably
Interesting point by the author that a lot of seemingly adult-minded fare like this one had an on-screen proxy for the younger viewers. Let us refer to this from this point forward as the "Short Round" effect.
A lot of this reads more like a rebuke of The Force Awakens than an actual critique of Rogue One. If AV Club has such an ax to grind with JJ Abrams' finished product, perhaps they should of gone on record with this previously instead of trying to air it out here.
I mean, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston bare very little resemblance to each other and yet I can't recall anyone complaining about having to suspend their disbelief for the Thor franchise.
How come nobody ever asks Bob Dylan why you sound so much like Dewey Cox, Mr. Time Magazine?
And RE black Han Solo: if you only have one black actor in your movie and you cast him as the scoundrel (we all love Han, but damnit that's just what he is) are you embracing diversity or conforming to stereotypes? I'm so confused. Help me, AV Club, you're my only hope! Tell me how to think/feel, please.
Of course AV Club would like to see a whole lot more commentary on how ahead of their time (or not) his films were from a diversity standpoint with their George Lucas biography. That's about all they really care about these days when revisiting the art of day's past, or so it would seem. No surprise there.
Damn bro, you woke af!!!! I retract everything I said, not just on this thread but ALL threads.
Great, just the latest example of the AV Club taking a classic work of art and evaluating it through the prism of current standards for decency and taste. That really does seem to be your cause celebre these days. It's a pointless, masturbatory and ultimately self-aggrandizing gesture.
Or this. Feels totes aprops: https://www.youtube.com/wat…
It's not just uncool, it's downright asinine.
RTJ is ruined for me (not that they were ever that great in the first place). Killer Mike, Colin Kaepernick and anyone else who either "stayed the fuck home" or encouraged others to do the same are a major contributing factor to this mess we're in now. Sure, he tried to walk back his comments by being all "well what I…
This is a great idea. They should put it into production immediately. The only issue is that there's apparently no greater risk than having a handsome, straight white male play the lead in a Star Wars movie these days. Shame, really.
Also, I haven't seen any one give "Submerged City" a shoutout in the comments. It's got a flute groove that would make even Ron Burgundy stand up and take notice: https://www.youtube.com/wat…
Many fond memories of playing the original trilogy with my cousin. Those game were downright cinematic by 8-bit standards, with actual narrative stakes and just a compelling sense of atmosphere. The only Castlevania games I played extensively on my own were the most popular ones SCIV and SotN, so my recommendations…
I suppose all of this could've been avoided if OBJ had whistled at her or something. Nevermind the fact that such behavior towards a white woman could've gotten a black man killed about 60 years ago in this country. But if it would spare Lena Dunham from feeling like flaming garbage if only for a second then I'd say…
