They were being friendly. Everyone has different experiences.

I've never told anyone to smile outside of a photo, yet several women - strangers - have told me to smile, and I liked it because they were thinking of my feelings.

In SC the ad is still running more than ever. It even followed a local news report on its "being pulled". Probably had to honor the day's contracts.
