I don’t doubt that it’s more complex. But doesn’t all that complexity, or at least most of it, also apply to transverse/AWD layouts? It would seem “easier” to create transverse/RWD than transverse/AWD. You’d get the benefits of transverse packaging, with driving dynamics of a RWD car.

Why can’t you have RWD with a front-mounted transverse engine?
