As someone who never played Gen 2 originally, playing the remake blew my mind and overwhelmed me to the point that I was too scared to play, worried that I might miss things happening elsewhere. Really is too much to do in that game.

No, get the Gen 2 remakes first. They're the best in the series. Tech of Gen 4, music of Gen 2, Gen 3+4 Pokemon added in post-game content. It's crazy good. X&Y are technically good but they do lack a magic.
