How large/explorable is this world?

I honestly think Rune Factory kind of perfected the formula for these types of games (as off putting as the anime style/tropes are), as far as farming/combat/monster collecting. I enjoyed Stardew but never really stuck with it.

This looks like a game that might have been interesting if it had been released 5 years ago. All of these Harvest Moon derivatives are getting tiresome. 

Is the combat in this even fun? Like, actually fun and not just something that you “don’t regret” wasting the short time of life on?
