You’re reading things that aren’t there. What I said was that I can’t really get worked up over people getting a great deal on an apartment and not having access to luxury amenities. As you can see from the comments, these renters are not being asked to do without things that most renters don’t do without.

No, actually. But I really don’t think that, given the existence of unjustifiable slums that still exist in US cities, having to buy a floor lamp and accept my own packages counts anywhere near “the bottom”.

Neither do we! We actually also don’t have any working overhead lights in the living room—we got a floor lamp, so not that big a deal. Would I love to have access to a gym and a doorman and a dishwasher and a courtyard and a thousand other luxuries? Yes. But, I’m in a safe neighborhood in an apartment I can afford,

So, obviously everything in the units should be functional, but, as someone who pays $1,400 a month to live in a tiny garden (read:basement) unit, I find it hard to sympathize with complaints that $1,100 for a two bedroom in a safe neighborhood doean’t come with a doorman and a gym.
