I thought it was pretty well laid out in the movie that Akira is experiencing a feedback loop of psychic and kinetic powers run amok and the resulting blobmonster was a natural progression of what had occurred earlier in the film.

Respectfully disagree, my friend. Considering the breadth and depth of the 38 volume manga I think Akira the movie was one of the best adaptations ever made of such an epic source material. It could have been so. much. worse.
